This year we decided to do away with our cable. We still have local channels but no extras. It's been a while coming. The kids have become really attached to shows. I have no problem with the shows. I was struggling to deal with the constant access to them, though. That and the constant bombardment of stuff. Commercials, product placement in shows, stuff is everywhere. Oh, and I was watching TV more than I should have been. One other but secondary reason for getting rid of cable is cost. It makes a small dent in our budget to not pay extra for the channels we don't need.
So, we ditched the cable, got a Roku, and have cut back on TV. The Roku lets us stream from Netflix and has some other free options like news and other stuff. It doesn't solve the problem of the kids wanted shows often but it makes me think a little more about how often I cave in to their requests. On Netflix they can watch shows that are awesome but not available on TV. Shaun the Sheep, Pink Panther, and Looney Toons are a few. I am able to find shows that I want to watch that aren't just garbage that I watch just because "it's on". So far the adjustment has been minor but good.

We never went with cable and also have streaming netflix and my kids also love watching Shaun the Sheep and Pink Panther. But, in the same way your kids liked access to cable, mine love access to Netflix. It gets harder and harder to say no. Charis knows how to turn everything on and pick something to watch, all by herself.
Love Sean the Sheep! We did without cable for our first year in Springfield. I never found it that hard. Could do it again, but Jeff is addicted to sports now and wouldn't get all the games he loves. We let the kids watch too much TV on Saturday an Sunday morning, but are pretty good on the weekdays. I don't like to have the TV on at all during daycare hours except for when it is quiet time and my non napper is watching a show.
Kelley and I love Shaun the Sheep! Netflix is awesome for no advertising or commercials.
We went down to the most basic plan. Which means we have network TV, but not much more. We just couldn't part with our DVR, since we watch all of our shows after the babies are asleep. So far so good. :)
